What is Illegal Dumping?

Did you know that it’s illegal to dump garbage, appliances, and even snow on private property or public spaces such as parking lots, or parks? There are strict By-laws that surround where and how to place and dispose of any type of waste. That’s why it’s important to know what is and is not allowed when it comes to dealing with your waste and all of that excess snow so that you don’t end up facing any fines.

Before you place your waste somewhere seemingly innocent, here’s what you should know about illegal dumping in Ottawa:

What Is Illegal Dumping?

Illegal dumping refers to improperly discarding waste in areas where it does not belong. It is illegal to dump any materials along roadways, vacant parking lots, or on other people’s private property.

Even on your own private property, such as a home, business or farm, you can be asked to remove and clean up your surrounding waste if it is deemed unacceptable by a By-law officer.

What Happens If Someone Dumps Garbage on Your Property?

If your own property has become an illegal dumping ground for neighbours or individuals unknown, then it is still your responsibility as the property owner to clean it up. This also includes snow.

If you are able to identify the persons responsible or even identify a licence plate, you should report it to the By-law services where it can be dealt with accordingly. The individuals involved may be brought to court and fined.

What is the Fine if Caught Dumping Illegally?

If you or someone involved in dumping waste illegally is caught either on private property or for fouling the sidewalks in some way, they can be charged with a fine of $305.

What to Do If You Witness Illegal Dumping

If you do witness illegal dumping, it’s important to report it immediately to your local By-law services. Keep in mind that when you do make a report you must be willing to provide the information that’s necessary. You may also be required to attend a court hearing to provide your testimony and statement. Without your testimony as evidence, the charges will be dropped.

It’s important to always be cautious when disposing of any waste, household items or even snow. Illegal dumping is bad for the environment, it’s bad for the city, and it’s illegal.
