Why E-Waste Does Not Belong in Landfills

First off, the City of Ottawa does not collect electronic waste (e-waste) as part of its regular curbside garbage collection. There is a good reason for this – e-waste does not belong in our landfills. E-waste is a hazardous material which over time leaks toxic elements, so even in cities and towns where the disposal of e-waste is not regulated it should stay out of landfills. The leaching of dangerous toxic elements into the soil and water can even have negative health effects on surrounding communities. Harmful elements in e-waste include but are not limited to:

    • Mercury
    • Lead
    • Cadmium
    • Barium
    • Lithium
    • Polyvinyl Chloride
    • Polybrominated Flame Retardants

As responsible citizens, safe disposal of e-waste is essential. Electronic waste makes up a greater amount of overall waste each year and the impact it has on our health and environment should be mitigated. At Junk Ninja, we are committed to disposing electronic waste in the safest possible. Book an appointment today to get your e-waste hauled away!

    Frequently Asked Questions

    What exactly is E-Waste?
E-waste, which is short for electronic waste, is by definition any electronic material. This means anything that plugs into a power source or uses batteries. In Canada, compact fluorescent lights are considered E-Waste and should be disposed of accordingly. Due to the environmental impact of disposing of electronic goods, E-Waste is its own category of waste which needs to be disposed of differently than other household waste.
What items are considered as E-Waste in Ottawa?
The City of Ottawa has regulated that E-Waste is not eligible for curbside pickup. While the list itself is not exhaustive, the following items are the most common forms of E-Waste:

    • VCR and DVD players
    • Telephones and cellphones
    • Radios
    • Copiers, fax machines, scanners
    • Cameras, digital cameras
    • Amplifiers, stereos, speakers, receivers
    • Keyboards and mice
    • Hard drives
    • Televisions
    • Desktop computers and Laptops

An easy way to determine whether or not something is E-Waste is to ask yourself “does this have a plug, or rely on batteries to function?”. If the answer is yes, then it is E-Waste and must be disposed of accordingly. If you have E-Waste you would like removed from your home or business, book an appointment to get it taken away!

Why shouldn’t I put my E-Waste in the normal trash?
Aside from the fact that Ottawa and other cities do not allow E-Waste for curbside pickup, throwing away electronics such as computers, video game consoles, televisions, home appliances, or pretty much any electronic appliance in a landfill is extremely hazardous to the environment. Toxins such as mercury, lead, and hexavalent chromium can spread into the air, and leech into the ground and water. This can lead to the bioaccumulation in the food chain, which passes to fish and other animals and eventually to the people who consume them. You should do everything to avoid throwing away your electronics with your day-to-day trash.

Whether you are getting rid of some old electronics which have piled up in your basement or if you have an entire office worth of E-Waste, we’re just a call away.
Are there laws and regulations governing the disposal of E-Waste in Canada?
In Canada, the regulation of E-Waste is a complicated affair. The different levels of the Canadian government control different aspects of E-Waste.

    • The Federal Government regulates toxic substances, and regulates the movement and transfer of hazardous waste between provinces and countries. They also establish legislation such as the Canadian Environmental Protection Act (CEPA 1999).
    • Provincial and Territorial Governments also regulate intra-provincial movements of waste and also control & liscense waste generators, carriers, and treatment facilities
    • Municipal Governments are those which have the strongest impact on day-to-day collection and disposal of E-Waste. They oversee waste management services and may impose local landfill bans. The City of Ottawa does not allow for E-Waste to be disposed of in its landfills.
