How do I find out where to dispose of an item in Ottawa?

But if you want the quick rules of thumb: Ottawa curbside garbage is limited to three items per collection day; a bag or bin under 15 kg/33 lbs counts as one item, and each bulky item (like a couch or broken table) counts as one too. Good question, and no, the City of Ottawa runs its own official Waste Explorer at ottawa.ca/WasteExplorer, and ours is a separate tool built by us here at Junk Ninja. We built ours to be fast and simple for everyday searches, but for anything hazardous or anything you want to triple-check, we always point you back to the City’s official tool and City programs (like their Household Hazardous Waste events). Think of ours as the quick-answer version and the City’s as the official record.
Does Ottawa Waste Explorer tell me about recycling, donation, and hazardous waste too?
Yep, that’s the whole point: we don’t just tell you “garbage or not.” A few things worth knowing straight up: e-waste (TVs, computers, anything with a plug or battery) never goes curbside in Ottawa, full stop. Big appliances like fridges, stoves, and dryers aren’t picked up at the curb either; you need to take those to a retailer or recycler. Paint, chemicals, and other hazardous stuff go to one of the City’s Household Hazardous Waste events or a participating retailer. Good news, though: sofas, mattresses, and furniture actually ARE picked up curbside as bulky items; they just count toward your three-item limit and can’t be bagged. Our tool breaks all of this down item by item, so you’re not left flipping between five different city webpages.
