Between the take-out containers from lunch, the coffee cups, water bottles, and piles of print-outs that end up being tossed in the trash, it can be frustrating to watch as all that recyclable material from work ends up in the wrong place. If you feel like your office could and should implement a recycling program, but aren’t sure how to go about initiating it, here are some helpful tips for starting a recycling program in our office.
Determine What Should be Recycled
What does and does not belong in the recycling bin is not always clear. Is Styrofoam recyclable? What about ink cartridges? Keurig cups? So begin by researching what it is that should and should not be recycled. Chances are there will be a few items that will surprise you and your coworkers. Check out our Ottawa Recycling Guide for a list of what can and can’t be recycled. If you don’t see something on the list, just ask us and we’ll give you the answer.
Encourage Employee Participation
Of course, a recycling program is only as good and effective as those who are willing to actually participate in it. So getting employees on board with this is essential. You can encourage them by providing recycling bins near each of their offices and cubicles. And always plan to place recycling bins beside trashcans, especially in rooms and areas that use lots of paper, such as the mail room and copy room.
Inform Maintenance Staff
Informing and educating your office maintenance staff about the proper procedures for dealing with recycling is also important. Without them being informed, they can easily just toss all of the recycling work into the garbage without thinking about it. Always be sure to inform the cleaning staff about your program, and instruct them on the proper procedures to carry out.
Dealing With The Recyclables
After all the recycling has been collected, of course it needs to be removed and disposed of somehow. That’s where an external company might be necessary to hire for removing it, especially if you’re doing a big office cleanup or renovation and have lots to get rid of but don’t want to chuck it in the garbage.
E-Waste Recycling
Does your office have a room with broken computers, monitors, and fax machines from back in the 90s? Are your drawers filled with old computer mice and outdated cell phones? E-waste removal & recycling is just as important as paper and plastic recycling, so don’t overlook it as part of your office’s recycling program.
We all know how important it is to recycle. And it can be frustrating to observe how your office may be neglecting this. So why not lead by example by initiating a recycling program that your employees or co-workers can participate in? All it takes is a few simple steps to get the ball rolling and to help keep some of those materials out of our landfills.
