De-Cluttering & Junk Removal for Spring Cleaning

With spring upon us, now is a great time to take on a decluttering project.

If you’re reading this whilst the COVID-19 Stay at Home measures are in place, you’ve got even more time on your hands, and you’re at home anyway. Why not make your home a more attractive and productive space?!

Decluttering offers many benefits for your home or office space, both tangibly for functionality, as well as the mental and emotional health benefits of living and working in a fresh, clean space.

The Functional Benefits of Decluttering

The concept of decluttering has undergone quite the renaissance.

Much of this is thanks to Japanese aesthetical influencer Mari Kondo, whose books and TV series on “Tidying Up” – and her “KonMari Method” – have created a tremendous following.

Decluttering isn’t just about getting rid of junk – though that is a big part of it. (more on junk removal coming up in just a bit)

Decluttering also means creating a space that is free of obstacles, more ‘clean’ and ‘open,’ thus enabling its inhabitants to enjoy it more aesthetically and use it more functionally.

By decluttering a room, for example, you’re getting rid of items that aren’t being used, opening up space to

  1. messy basement needs cleanupUse for something else (though be careful not to re-clutter it!)
  2. Make that room more aesthetically pleasing

Decluttering can be done to your entire house, including spaces such as:

  • Basement
  • Garage
  • Living Room
  • Bedrooms
  • Closets
  • Kitchen
  • Bathrooms
  • Front porch
  • Yard

Pretty much anywhere in or around your house – just take a look around and identify what’s been piling up all these years, causing the state of clutter you and your family now see and experience every day.

Wouldn’t it be nice to get rid of all that clutter?

Sure, you say, but not sure where to start?

There’s hope – and a simple, step-by-step way.

The Steps of Decluttering

If decluttering and getting rid of all the junk that stands in the way between you and a clean, beautiful, organized and functional house seems like a daunting task, there’s a way to make it better.

Like any task, it’s best to break it up into chunks.

“Chunking” is a time-honoured method. Henry Ford used it to create the assembly line, for example, and that’s now how cars are built.

If you have kids, you’ve probably used this technique to get them to do their chores or their homework. It all seems so daunting to them, so they don’t know where to start and just throw up their hands in dismay. Then you come to the rescue with your method to break up the big project into smaller, more manageable tasks.

If you have a cluttered house, the same methodology holds true.

Start with one room, and make your goal for this task a clean room. It doesn’t have to be the biggest room in the house that you start with, either. Whatever it takes to get through a task to its completion will help you with the bigger project, right?

So why not start with a closet?

Look at everything you’ve got in that closet – shirts, shoes, pants, boxes, broken hangers, maybe even garbage or rolled up paper, etc.

If you’ve outgrown that clothing, or it’s worn out, or you no longer want to wear it – out it goes!

Look up on the shelves – what has been stacking up and collecting dust all these years?

Maybe there’s an old photo album you want to save. Or a keepsake. Other than that, if it’s not “bringing you joy” (as Mari Kondo likes to say), say goodbye!

Soon enough, you’ll have a lot of items… stuff… junk, really… that will be ready for disposal.

Now you can use your closet for better form and function. Organize it better. Maybe put in some shelving to hold more in-use items that will be coming from cluttered dressers, other rooms, etc.

Now do the math.

Multiply this project by every space in your home that needs decluttering.

Take them on one at a time.

Soon enough, you’ll be able to fill a whole container of junk to be removed.
